Major Existing Hydroelectric Plant in World

Three Gorges Dam

Three Gorges Dam is a hydroelectric dam that spans the Yangtze river, located in china.

Made of concrete and steel, the dam is 2,335m(7,661)ft long and the top of the dam is 185m(607)ft above the sea level.

Three gorges dam is gravity type dam.

  • The hydroelectric power station consists of 34 generators:32 main generators, each with the capacity of 700MW and two plant power generators, each with the capacity of 50MW,making a total capacity of 22,500MW.Among those 32 main generators, 14 are installed in the north side of the dam, 12 in the south side, and the remaining six in the underground power plant in the mountain south of the dam.
  • Three gorges uses Francis turbine.
  • The rotational speed of turbine is 75 revolutions per minute.
